Imam Shot Dead During Ramadan Prayers in Cameroon.

The annual month-long period of fasting, the Ramadan, has dawned on notes of heartache for Cameroon’s community of Muslims in general and those in the Noun Division of the West Region in particular.

Unidentified gunmen stormed a mosque in Magba, a modest locality in the district, instantly shooting its spiritual leader to death.  According to field reports, the assassins-on-the-run broke into the house of Allah at around 7:30 pm Monday, July 23 and directly sprayed bullets on Imam Zakariou as led evening prayers.

The 40-year-old cleric was reportedly hit several times in the head and died on the spot.  No probable motives for the attack have been advanced and no one, either, has claimed responsibility for the fatal raid.

Locals have nonetheless indicated it comes just about a month after highway robbers mounted a blockade on the Foumban-Magba road stretch, stopping vehicles and emptying travelers of their money and other belongings.  The attack also followed swelling concerns over a growing influx into Cameroon of members of the Nigerian terror group, the Boko Haram.

Panic has ever since gripped the population of the predominantly Muslim community in Magba.  Divisional Officer, Alain Blaise Mvondo Nkoulou Tuesday announced security forces had engaged a huge manhunt for the perpetrators of the grisly shooting.  He instructed the massively-deployed security officers ensure that they capture the assailants and bring them to book.
