Unidentified gunmen stormed a mosque in Magba, a modest locality in the district, instantly shooting its spiritual leader to death. According to field reports, the assassins-on-the-run broke into the house of Allah at around 7:30 pm Monday, July 23 and directly sprayed bullets on Imam Zakariou as led evening prayers.
The 40-year-old cleric was reportedly hit several times in the head and died on the spot. No probable motives for the attack have been advanced and no one, either, has claimed responsibility for the fatal raid.
Locals have nonetheless indicated it comes just about a month after highway robbers mounted a blockade on the Foumban-Magba road stretch, stopping vehicles and emptying travelers of their money and other belongings.
